The first edition of the tournament was held in 1957 and since then, it has been held every two years, with the exception of 1966 and 2021 due to political issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively. The competition features 24 teams, divided into six groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage. The winner of the tournament earns the title of African champion and qualifies for the FIFA Confederations Cup.
