The tournament consists of six teams representing various regions of <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-cricket/team-new-zealand-1">New Zealand</a>, including <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/city-auckland">Auckland</a>, <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/city-canterbury">Canterbury</a>, <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-cricket/team-central-districts">Central Districts</a>, <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-cricket/team-northern-districts">Northern Districts</a>, <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-rugby-union/team-otago-1">Otago</a>, and <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/city-wellington">Wellington</a>. The teams compete in a round-robin format, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs. The winner of the competition is awarded the Ford Trophy, named after the main sponsor, and also earns a spot in the Champions Trophy.
