The <a href="/ctiy-memphis">Memphis</a> Showboats were a professional American football team that competed in the <a href="/country-united-states">United States</a> Football League (<a href="/sport-american-football/competition-usfl">USFL</a>) from 1984 to 1985. Owned by banking executive William Dunavant and coached by Memphis native Pepper Rodgers, the Showboats boasted a talented roster that included future <a href="/sport-american-football/competition-nfl">NFL</a> stars Reggie White and Jim Kelly. The team played their home games at the <a href="/sport-american-football/team-liberty-2">Liberty</a> Bowl <a href="/stadium-memorial-stadium">Memorial Stadium</a> and had a dedicated fan base that supported the team through their brief existence. The Showboats had a record of 21 wins and 15 losses during their two seasons in the USFL, with their most successful run being in 1985 when they reached the playoffs. Despite their success, the USFL folded in 1986 and the Showboats ceased to exist. However, Memphis football fans still hold fond memories of this short-lived but impactful team.
