The Kentucky Derby is one of the most famous horse racing events in the United States and the opening race of the American Triple Crown. Held annually at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, it traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in May. First run in 1875, the Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses, contested over 1¼ miles on a dirt track. Up to 20 horses can compete, with each horse partnered by a jockey and supported by an owner, trainer, and stable team. Unlike team sports, the Kentucky Derby features individual horses and jockeys racing for the win, while trainers and owners shape each contender’s preparation and strategy. Churchill Downs is known for its distinctive Twin Spires, historic grandstands, and capacity crowds, making the venue a central part of the event’s identity. The winner earns the first opportunity to pursue the Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. With its rich history, elite Thoroughbred competition, and iconic Louisville setting, the Kentucky Derby remains a major fixture on the American sports calendar.
