The Yarra Valley Classic was a professional women’s tennis tournament staged at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia, from 1 to 7 February 2021. A WTA 500 event, it was added to the calendar as part of the revised schedule before the Australian Open, giving players valuable match practice after the COVID-19 quarantine period. Although named for Victoria’s Yarra Valley region, the tournament was played on Melbourne Park’s hard courts, with matches hosted across the venue’s stadium and outside courts. The singles draw featured leading international players, including world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, Sofia Kenin, Serena Williams and Garbiñe Muguruza. Spain’s Muguruza won the women’s singles title, defeating Czech player Markéta Vondroušová in the final. The event also included a women’s doubles competition, where pairs of players competed for the championship. For tennis fans, the Yarra Valley Classic offered a strong field, high-level WTA matchups and a useful preview of the season’s first Grand Slam. Its 2021 edition was a one-time tournament created during an unusual Australian summer of tennis, rather than a regular event held in the Yarra Valley.
