The Gippsland Trophy was a professional women’s tennis tournament held at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia, from 31 January to 6 February 2021. Staged as a WTA 500 event, it formed part of the Melbourne Summer Series, which provided players with competition ahead of the Australian Open during a pandemic-affected season. The tournament featured a singles draw and doubles competition, with matches played on Melbourne Park’s hard courts, including its major arena courts. The field included leading international players such as Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams and Aryna Sabalenka. Belgium’s Elise Mertens won the singles title, defeating Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 6–4, 6–1 in the final. The Gippsland Trophy was a one-off event created for the 2021 calendar and was not held in subsequent years. For tennis fans searching for Gippsland Trophy results, players, venue details or tournament history, the event is notable as part of the unusual series of WTA competitions staged in Melbourne before that year’s Australian Open.
