The J-Bay Open is a professional surfing competition held at Supertubes, a renowned right-hand point break in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Rather than competing in teams, surfers enter as individuals and earn scores for their rides, with men’s and women’s divisions featured in World Surf League Championship Tour editions. Supertubes provides the event’s natural sporting arena, known for long, fast waves that reward speed, precision and control. Conditions vary with swell, wind and tide, so competitors must adapt their tactics throughout each heat. The contest draws leading international surfers alongside local South African talent, and past editions have included celebrated champions such as Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning. Heats are decided by judges who assess each wave for factors including commitment, difficulty, variety and execution. The J-Bay Open has become a prominent stop on the professional surfing calendar and an important showcase for Jeffreys Bay’s surf culture and coastal setting. Event dates, format and tour status can vary by season, so fans should check the World Surf League’s official schedule for current competition information.
