The Neujahrsspringen, or New Year’s ski jumping event, is a major annual competition held on January 1 at the Große Olympiaschanze in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. It is the second stop of the Four Hills Tournament, following the opening event in Oberstdorf and preceding competitions in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen. Rather than a team match, the contest features individual ski jumpers representing their countries, with results determined by jump distance and judges’ style scores. Athletes compete in paired knockout rounds before the leading jumpers advance through the final rounds, adding head-to-head excitement to the traditional tournament format. The venue, rebuilt for the 2008–09 season, is a modern ski jumping hill with a long history in the sport and a prominent setting beneath the Alps. The New Year competition attracts leading international jumpers, including champions from Germany, Austria, Norway, Poland, and Slovenia, although the field changes each season. Its holiday date, large crowds, and connection to the Four Hills Tournament make the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Neujahrsspringen one of the best-known events on the ski jumping calendar.
