TCS Lidingöloppet is a major annual cross-country running event held on Lidingö, an island just outside Stockholm, Sweden. First staged in 1965, it is widely known as one of the world’s largest cross-country races and attracts elite athletes, club runners and recreational participants from Sweden and abroad. Unlike a conventional stadium athletics meet, the event takes place on a marked course through woodland, open fields and residential areas, with the main 30-kilometre race running from Koltorps gärde to Grönsta gärde. The programme also includes shorter races and events for children, giving runners of different ages and abilities an opportunity to take part. Competition is primarily individual rather than team-based, although many entrants represent athletics clubs and workplaces. The elite field features experienced distance runners, while the wider starting groups include thousands of participants aiming to complete the course or improve their personal times. TCS Lidingöloppet combines competitive running with a large community event, and its varied terrain makes pacing, endurance and preparation important. For athletics fans and runners, it offers a distinctive alternative to track racing and city road marathons.
