Six Day Cycling is a track cycling event held over six days, traditionally in an indoor velodrome, where elite riders compete in teams across a demanding programme of races. Most commonly, each team consists of two cyclists who take turns racing and resting, with the Madison—a fast-paced event featuring hand-sling exchanges between teammates—often determining the overall standings. Riders also contest disciplines such as points races, elimination races and time trials, depending on the event’s format. The team that completes the greatest distance in the main endurance race, while meeting the competition’s rules for laps and points, takes the victory. Although the classic six-day format developed in Europe and remains closely associated with historic cycling venues, modern events may vary in schedule and race selection. The velodrome’s steeply banked track, close spectator seating and energetic atmosphere make Six Day Cycling a distinctive sporting spectacle. Fans can follow the participating teams, individual riders, race results and overall classification throughout the event. Combining strategy, speed and stamina, Six Day Cycling showcases track cycling at its most intense and offers an accessible introduction to the Madison and other professional velodrome disciplines.
