The Women’s Boat Race is an annual rowing competition between the women’s crews of the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, two of Britain’s leading universities. First held in 1927, it is now a major fixture in the sporting calendar and takes place on the River Thames in London. The crews race on the Championship Course, a 4.25-mile stretch from Putney to Mortlake, passing landmarks including Hammersmith Bridge and finishing near Chiswick Bridge. There is no stadium: spectators watch from the riverbanks and bridges, while many follow the action through live broadcasts. Each university’s boat is rowed by eight athletes, with a coxswain steering the crew and coordinating its effort. The rowers are selected student athletes who train throughout the academic year for the event. Oxford’s crew is traditionally known as the Dark Blues, while Cambridge races as the Light Blues. Since 2015, the women’s and men’s Boat Races have been held on the same day and course, giving the women’s competition a prominent place in the shared event. The race combines university rivalry, endurance and teamwork in one of the world’s best-known rowing contests.
