The Battle of the Sexes was a landmark tennis match held on September 20, 1973, at the Houston Astrodome in Houston, Texas. The contest featured American tennis champion Billie Jean King, then 29, against Bobby Riggs, a 55-year-old former Wimbledon champion and outspoken promoter of the match. Rather than competing as teams, the two players faced each other in a singles exhibition played under standard tennis rules, with the winner decided in a best-of-five-sets format. King defeated Riggs in straight sets, 6–4, 6–3, 6–3, before a reported live crowd of more than 30,000 spectators. The match also drew a large television audience and became one of the most widely discussed sporting events of its era. Its significance extended beyond the score: King’s victory became a defining moment in the history of women’s tennis and helped bring public attention to gender equality in sports. Today, the Battle of the Sexes remains a notable tennis event associated with Billie Jean King, Bobby Riggs, and the Houston Astrodome.
