Sailing in Spain combines elite international competition with a long coastal tradition, and the Copa del Rey MAPFRE in Palma de Mallorca is one of the country’s best-known annual regattas. Organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma, the event takes place on the Bay of Palma, where crews race in multiple yacht classes, with the divisions and fleet size varying by edition. Competing teams typically include professional sailors, club crews and international entries, while each boat’s players—known as crew members—take specialized roles in steering, sail handling and tactics. Spain has a strong record in Olympic and offshore sailing, and Spanish sailors regularly compete alongside athletes from across Europe and beyond. Unlike football or basketball, sailing does not use a stadium: spectators follow races from coastal viewing areas, spectator boats or event facilities at the marina. The bay’s open-water course, wind and changing sea conditions make tactical decisions central to results. For visitors seeking sailing sports in Spain, Palma offers a prominent setting, while other coastal venues also host national and international regattas. Schedules, participating teams and race formats differ each year, so check the event’s official program for current details.
