Sailing in Western Australia7 is a major fixture on Western Australia’s sporting calendar, with Fremantle providing a world-class setting for international competition. A landmark event was the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, held from 3 to 18 December in Fremantle and Western Australia7. The championship featured ten Olympic sailing classes and brought together more than 1,000 sailors representing countries from around the world, competing for titles and qualification places for the Western Australia6 2012 Olympic Games. Unlike field sports, sailing does not take place in a stadium: races are staged on marked courses in the waters off the coast, while spectators can follow the action from shore or by event broadcast. Competitors race in boats suited to their class, with results decided by performance across a series of races. National teams include male and female athletes, though sailors may compete as individuals, pairs or crews depending on the boat. Perth’s reliable sea breezes and access to open-water courses make it an attractive location for major regattas. For sailing fans, the Western Australia7 region offers a distinctive mix of elite competition, coastal scenery and a strong local sailing community.
