The Sentry Tournament of Champions is a professional golf event on the PGA Tour, traditionally opening the tour’s calendar year in Maui, Hawaii. Known today as The Sentry, the tournament is played at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, a scenic, par-73 layout overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Unlike team-based sports, the competition features individual players competing in stroke play, with the lowest total score over four rounds earning the title. Historically, the field was limited to PGA Tour winners from the previous calendar year; eligibility later expanded to include leading players from the prior season’s FedExCup standings. This format brings together a select group of top professionals, including major champions and prominent tour winners, rather than a set of teams. Kapalua’s wide fairways, dramatic elevation changes and coastal winds create distinctive challenges, while the course’s generous length can also produce low scores. The event is widely followed by golf fans for its strong field, memorable island setting and early-season competition. For spectators and viewers searching for Sentry Tournament of Champions details, the Plantation Course, player eligibility and individual stroke-play format are central features of this celebrated PGA Tour event.
