Played at the Empress Ballroom in the historic Winter Gardens, the event is a highlight of the summer darts calendar and attracts a large live audience alongside viewers around the world. Its 32-player field includes leading competitors from the PDC Order of Merit and the ProTour rankings, creating a knockout contest featuring established champions and emerging talent. Players compete in legs using the distinctive double-in, double-out format: each must first score a double to begin scoring, then finish a leg by hitting a double. Match lengths increase as the tournament progresses, building toward a longer final. The World Matchplay has a celebrated history dating back to 1994, and its roll of honour includes some of darts’ most successful names. Phil Taylor holds the record for the most titles, while stars such as Michael van Gerwen and Luke Humphries have also lifted the trophy. With elite players, dramatic finishes and its famous Blackpool venue, the Betfred World Matchplay remains a major fixture in professional darts.
