The Tokyo Marathon is one of the world’s premier athletics events and a key race in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series. Held annually in Tokyo, Japan, it covers the official marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres (26.2 miles) and typically takes place in March. Unlike a team sport, the race is contested by individual elite and amateur runners, with separate men’s and women’s fields and wheelchair competitions. International stars compete alongside Japan’s leading distance runners, while thousands of recreational athletes take part. The course starts near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku and passes landmarks and districts including Asakusa, Ginza and Nihonbashi before finishing near Tokyo Station on Gyoko-dori Avenue. Rather than being played in a single stadium, the Tokyo Marathon uses the streets of the capital as its sporting venue, with designated start, finish and spectator areas. First held in 2007, it became a World Marathon Major in 2013 and is recognized for its fast urban course, large international field and strong support from spectators. Check official event information for current dates, entry details and elite athlete announcements.
