The Big Five Marathon is a distinctive South African athletics event held in the Entabeni Safari Conservancy in Limpopo Province. Unlike a conventional road race, this 42.2-kilometre marathon follows a rugged trail through open savannah, rocky terrain and bushveld, with no stadium or paved circuit. Runners compete as individuals rather than as teams, and the field includes international athletes as well as recreational distance runners. The course is known for steep climbs, changing surfaces and demanding weather, making preparation and endurance essential. Its name refers to Africa’s Big Five game animals: lion, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard, which live in the surrounding reserve. Wildlife may be visible from the route, but the event is conducted with safety measures and support from the organisers and reserve staff. The Big Five Marathon offers a rare combination of competitive running and safari scenery, attracting participants seeking an unusual challenge beyond traditional city races. For sports fans and runners researching South African marathons, it stands out for its remote setting, demanding trail course and close connection to the natural landscape.
