The Sydney Marathon is Australia’s premier road-running event, welcoming elite athletes, club runners and recreational participants to a 42.195-kilometre course through the city. Unlike a stadium sport, the marathon has no opposing teams or fixed playing field: runners compete individually, representing their countries, athletics clubs or personal goals. The course traditionally starts in North Sydney, crosses the Sydney Harbour Bridge and passes well-known city landmarks before finishing near the Sydney Opera House, offering views of the harbour and central Sydney. Elite men’s and women’s fields bring international competition, while thousands of amateur runners take part in the same event. The Sydney Marathon program also includes shorter running events, making the occasion accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities. Held annually, the race is a major fixture on Australia’s athletics calendar and attracts local and international visitors. For spectators, key viewing areas along the route provide opportunities to cheer on friends, professional runners and community teams. Whether following marathon results, learning about the course or planning race-day travel, this guide to the Sydney Marathon covers its runners, route and distinctive finish.
