The Shanghai International Marathon, widely known as the Shanghai Marathon, is an annual road-running event held in Shanghai, China. First staged in 1996, it has grown into one of Asia’s leading marathon races and attracts elite international runners alongside thousands of recreational participants. The programme typically includes a full marathon, with additional shorter-distance events offered in some editions. Competitors race as individuals rather than as club or national teams, and the elite fields feature separate men’s and women’s competitions. The course showcases Shanghai’s contrast of historic streets and modern city districts, with the Bund among the landmark areas associated with the route. Start and finish locations can vary by edition; recent races have used the Bund as the starting point and Shanghai Stadium as the finish, so runners should check the official event guide for current details. The Shanghai Marathon is recognised on the international athletics calendar and is known for its large field, fast urban course and strong spectator support. For race dates, entry rules, route information, elite runner announcements and results, consult the event’s official updates.
