The Jungfrau Marathon is one of Switzerland’s best-known mountain running events, attracting elite athletes and recreational runners from around the world. Unlike a traditional stadium competition, this road race follows a challenging alpine course through the Bernese Oberland, beginning in Interlaken and finishing at Kleine Scheidegg, beneath the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. The official marathon distance is 42.195 kilometres, with approximately 1,823 metres of elevation gain, making endurance, pacing and hill-running ability essential. Along the route, runners pass through villages including Wilderswil, Lauterbrunnen and Wengen, while spectators gather at course-side viewing points to support participants. First held in 1993, the Jungfrau Marathon is generally staged in September and is celebrated for its mountain scenery as well as its demanding climb. It has no teams, clubs or stadium-based play: athletes compete as individual runners, with results recorded by race category and finishing time. For sports fans searching for Jungfrau Marathon details, the event combines marathon racing, alpine landscapes and a distinctive high-altitude finish in one of Europe’s most memorable running challenges.
