The Chicago Marathon is one of the world’s premier annual road-running events, attracting elite athletes and recreational runners to a 26.2-mile course through the city of Chicago. Held each October, it is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a series that also includes races in Boston, London, Berlin, Tokyo, and New York City. Rather than featuring competing teams or a stadium venue, the marathon showcases individual runners representing countries, clubs, and personal causes, with professional men’s and women’s fields racing alongside a large participant field. The course starts and finishes in Grant Park and passes through numerous Chicago neighborhoods, offering views of landmarks and enthusiastic crowds along the route. Its largely flat profile makes the race known for fast times, although weather and race-day conditions can influence performance. The event is organized by the Chicago Area Runners Association and Bank of America, and results are tracked by finishing time and division, including elite, age-group, and wheelchair competitions. For spectators and sports fans, the Chicago Marathon combines world-class athletics, community participation, and a distinctive citywide race experience.
