The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is one of South Africa’s leading road-running events, attracting elite athletes and thousands of recreational runners from around the world. Held annually in Cape Town, the 42.2-kilometre race is an individual athletics competition rather than a team sport, although clubs and running groups often take part together. The event’s start and finish area is at Green Point, near the Cape Town Stadium, with the course passing through city streets and offering views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic coastline. Runners compete in men’s and women’s elite races alongside open categories, while wheelchair athletes and participants in shorter associated races add to the programme. The Cape Town Marathon is known for its scenic urban route, energetic spectator support and varied field of international professionals and local competitors. Its course showcases landmarks and neighbourhoods across the city, making it a distinctive fixture on the South African running calendar. For athletes, supporters and visitors, the event combines high-level marathon racing with a broad community celebration of distance running in Cape Town.
