The Big Sur International Marathon is an annual road-running event in California, known for its challenging coastal course and views of the Pacific Ocean. First held in 1986, the 26.2-mile race follows scenic Highway 1 from the Big Sur area north to Carmel, finishing near the Crossroads shopping center. Unlike stadium-based athletics competitions, the marathon uses the highway and surrounding coastline as its venue, with runners traveling point to point through Big Sur’s rugged landscape. Participants include elite competitors and recreational athletes, racing individually rather than as teams. The route features rolling hills, sustained climbs and descents, and the famous crossing of Bixby Creek Bridge, where a pianist traditionally performs for runners. The event typically takes place in late April and offers additional race distances and formats, which can vary by year. Its limited field size and picturesque setting make it a distinctive fixture on the California running calendar. Runners considering the Big Sur International Marathon should review official event information for current dates, registration details, course conditions, transportation arrangements, and available races.
