The Nationale-Nederlanden San Silvestre Vallecana is one of Spain’s best-known athletics events, held each year on December 31 in Madrid. Its 10-kilometre road race brings together elite international runners, Spanish athletes and thousands of recreational participants, making it a distinctive fixture on the global running calendar. Rather than competing as conventional team sports clubs, elite entrants represent their countries, athletics clubs or sponsors, while the popular race welcomes individual runners and groups. The event has been staged since 1964 and is divided into an international competition and a larger popular race, with separate start times and participation requirements. The route runs through central Madrid, beginning near the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and passing along major city streets before reaching the Vallecas district. The finish is by the Estadio de Vallecas, home ground of Rayo Vallecano, giving the race a recognizable stadium landmark and a lively local atmosphere. Known for its festive New Year’s Eve setting, strong fields and fast urban course, the San Silvestre Vallecana offers spectators and runners a memorable way to close the sporting year.
