The Great North Run is one of the world’s best-known half-marathon events, bringing elite athletes and tens of thousands of recreational runners to North East England. Founded in 1981 by Olympic medal-winning runner Brendan Foster, the annual 13.1-mile (21.1-kilometre) road race typically takes place in September. The route starts in Newcastle upon Tyne, crosses the River Tyne over the iconic Tyne Bridge, and continues through Gateshead and South Tyneside before finishing on the coast at South Shields. Rather than a team competition played in a stadium, the Great North Run is an open road race featuring individual runners, elite men’s and women’s fields, wheelchair athletes and charity participants. International professionals compete for race titles, while club runners and first-time entrants share the course and receive support from enthusiastic crowds. The event’s key locations are the city-centre start and coastal finish, with the Tyne Bridge serving as a memorable landmark along the route. For spectators, participants and sports fans, the Great North Run combines competitive distance running, community involvement and a distinctive Newcastle-to-South-Shields course.
