Golf in Mexico City has welcomed elite international competition, most notably the WGC-Mexico Championship at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Naucalpan, within the metropolitan area. From 2017 through 2020, the tournament brought leading PGA Tour players to a challenging, high-altitude course set about 7,800 feet above sea level. Unlike team sports, professional golf is generally an individual competition: players compete over four rounds of stroke play, with the lowest total score winning. The thin air at Chapultepec can send golf balls farther than at sea level, making distance control and course strategy especially important. Champions during the Mexico City era included Dustin Johnson, who won in 2017 and 2019, Phil Mickelson in 2018, and Patrick Reed in 2020. The event later moved away from Mexico City, so it should not be confused with the Mexico Open, a separate tournament held at Vidanta in Vallarta. For fans researching Mexico City golf tournaments, Club de Golf Chapultepec remains a landmark venue associated with world-class players, dramatic elevation, and memorable professional golf.
