The Queen Mother Champion Chase is one of the headline races of the Cheltenham Festival, a major annual event in British National Hunt horse racing. First run in 1959, the Grade 1 steeplechase is held on the Festival’s Wednesday at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire. Horses race over approximately two miles and must clear 13 fences, making speed, jumping skill and stamina essential. The field features elite chasers, with each horse representing its owner and stable rather than a sports team; jockeys and trainers also play key roles in a successful campaign. The race is named in honour of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, a noted supporter of racing. Its winners join a distinguished roll of champions, and the contest often brings together leading British and Irish horses.
