Officially known as the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle, it is run over approximately three miles and two furlongs on Cheltenham’s New Course and is a Grade 3 contest for horses aged five and older. The race is the culmination of a series of qualifying hurdles staged at racecourses across Britain and Ireland. Horses must earn a place in the final by meeting the qualification rules, making the event a competitive target for trainers, owners and jockeys throughout the season. As a handicap, runners carry different weights allocated according to their assessed ability, with the aim of creating a closely matched field. The final regularly attracts a large group of talented staying hurdlers, and its demanding distance tests stamina, jumping and race tactics.
