The Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup is the historic name used for the Cheltenham Gold Cup during its Magners sponsorship, one of the leading events in British National Hunt horse racing. Run at Cheltenham Racecourse, also known as Prestbury Park, the race is the feature contest of the Cheltenham Festival and is held over approximately three miles and two and a half furlongs, with 22 fences to negotiate. It is a Grade 1 steeplechase for experienced jumpers, and victory depends on the combined performance of horse, jockey and trainer rather than a team. Leading runners compete for the Gold Cup trophy, while jockeys must manage pace, jumping and positioning around Cheltenham’s demanding undulating course. The race has produced celebrated champions, including Arkle, Best Mate, Kauto Star and Golden Miller, whose records are central to its sporting history. Magners was the event’s title sponsor from 2009 to 2013; the race is now generally known as the Cheltenham Gold Cup. For racing fans, the contest offers a major test of stamina and jumping skill, with the field, jockey bookings and race conditions varying each year.
