The Ladbrokes John Francome Novices’ Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt horse race for novice chasers, staged at Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire, England. Run over approximately two miles and seven furlongs, the contest tests a horse’s stamina, jumping accuracy and ability to handle Newbury’s demanding fences. It is traditionally part of the racecourse’s November meeting and attracts promising novice horses preparing for bigger staying chases later in the season. Rather than teams, the main contenders are the horses, their jockeys and the trainers who prepare them; owners and stable staff also play important roles. The race is named in honour of John Francome, the celebrated former jump jockey and racing broadcaster. Its roll of honour includes horses that have gone on to compete at the highest level, making it a useful early-season measure of emerging chasing talent. For racing fans following the Ladbrokes John Francome Novices’ Chase, Newbury’s course, the runners’ jumping form and the tactics of each jockey are central to the action. The event combines competitive National Hunt racing with a significant test for horses new to chasing.
