The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, widely known as the King George, is one of Britain’s leading flat horse-racing events. Run on turf at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, the Group 1 contest covers one mile and four furlongs, or approximately 2,414 metres. It is usually held in July and is open to thoroughbreds aged three and older, bringing together leading horses, jockeys and trainers from Britain and abroad. First staged in 1951, the race honours King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and has become a major fixture in the international racing calendar. Its distance tests both speed and stamina, while Ascot’s course and the large field can make positioning and race tactics important. Past winners include distinguished champions such as Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Galileo and Enable. The King George is often a key summer target for horses aiming to establish their form against top-level middle-distance rivals, and it can help shape the season’s wider championship picture. For fans searching for King George horse racing information, Ascot details, race distance and notable winners, this historic event offers a compelling showcase of elite thoroughbred competition.
