The Johnny Henderson Challenge Cup, officially known as the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase, is a historic National Hunt horse race staged at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, England. A highlight of the Cheltenham Festival, it is a handicap steeplechase in which horses carry different weights according to their ratings, creating a competitive contest among experienced jumpers. The field consists of horses partnered by jockeys and prepared by trainers, rather than conventional teams, and the runners tackle fences over a distance of about two miles. The race is named in honour of Johnny Henderson, a prominent supporter of jump racing and father of champion trainer Nicky Henderson. Its challenging course and large, closely matched field make pace, jumping accuracy and tactical decisions especially important. Trainers and jockeys aim to secure a place in the race through the handicap entry process, while racegoers follow the form, weights and odds to assess the contenders. For visitors seeking Cheltenham Festival racing information, the Johnny Henderson Challenge Cup offers a memorable combination of speed, strategy and demanding National Hunt competition at one of Britain’s best-known racecourses.
