The International Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt horse race held at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, England, usually during the December Meeting. Run over approximately two miles and one furlong on Cheltenham’s New Course, the contest tests speed, jumping accuracy and stamina as runners negotiate eight hurdles. It is a championship-level opportunity for leading hurdlers, jockeys and trainers to assess their form during the winter season and build toward major spring targets, including the Cheltenham Festival. Unlike team sports, the event’s competitors are individual horses, each partnered by a jockey and prepared by a trainer; prominent racing stables often enter established performers as well as emerging contenders. The race was previously known as the Bula Hurdle, in honour of the celebrated hurdler, before adopting its current International Hurdle title. Its position on the Cheltenham racing calendar and its demanding course make it a useful form guide for fans following Britain’s top two-mile hurdles. For spectators, the meeting combines high-quality National Hunt racing with Cheltenham’s distinctive amphitheatre setting, while the result can reveal which horses are ready to challenge the season’s leading names.
