The Handicap is a horse racing event in which horses carry different weights, assigned by racing officials according to their assessed ability, to help create a more competitive contest. Rather than teams, the field is made up of individual horses, each partnered with a jockey and prepared by a trainer. The handicap rating and weight carried can influence a horse’s prospects, so form, distance, track conditions, and race tactics are important factors for fans to follow. Handicaps are staged at racecourses around the world, from historic venues to modern tracks; the specific stadium, race distance, and surface depend on the meeting. During the race, jockeys guide their mounts around the course while balancing pace and position, with the finish order determining the winner. These races can feature a varied field, including established runners and less-fancied contenders, making handicapping an engaging part of the sport. For spectators and bettors, The Handicap offers a chance to compare horse racing form, jockey performance, assigned weights, and course conditions before the start. Always check the official racecard for confirmed runners, declared jockeys, weights, and venue details.
