The Fighting Fifth Hurdle is a prestigious Grade 1 horse-racing event held at Newcastle Racecourse in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. Run over approximately two miles on the track’s left-handed course, the race is a highlight of the British National Hunt season and usually takes place in late November or early December. It is open to four-year-old and older horses, with runners tackling a series of hurdles at speed. Rather than teams, the competitors are horses ridden by jockeys and prepared by trainers; tactics, jumping accuracy and stamina can all prove decisive. The race’s name refers to the 5th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers, known as the “Fighting Fifth.” Its roll of honour includes leading hurdlers such as Buveur d’Air, Epatante and Constitution Hill, helping establish the event as an important early-season test for championship contenders. Newcastle Racecourse provides a modern setting for spectators, with trackside viewing and facilities for racegoers. For fans following British horse racing, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle offers a chance to assess emerging talent and established stars as they begin their winter campaigns.
