The Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt horse race held at Cheltenham Racecourse during the Cheltenham Festival in Gloucestershire, England. Run over approximately two miles and one furlong, the race features six hurdles and is open to novice mares aged four and older. It provides a high-profile test for horses beginning their hurdling careers, with jockeys guiding their mounts around Cheltenham’s demanding, undulating track and uphill finish. The field varies each year, bringing together promising mares trained by leading British and Irish racing yards; contenders are assessed on recent form, jumping ability, stamina and experience on undulating courses. Unlike team sports, the contest is decided by each horse and jockey combination, with trainers and owners shaping preparation and race strategy. The event is named in honour of Dawn Run, the celebrated mare who won both the Champion Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. As a Festival fixture, the Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle attracts racing fans interested in emerging talent, elite National Hunt competition and the next generation of mares likely to make their mark in major hurdle races.
