Sandown Imperial Cup Day is a major National Hunt horse-racing fixture held at Sandown Park Racecourse in Esher, Surrey, usually on the Saturday before the Cheltenham Festival. Its headline race, the Imperial Cup, is a Grade 3 handicap hurdle in which horses carry different weights according to their official ratings, creating a competitive test of speed, stamina and jumping ability. Rather than teams, the event features individual horses, ridden by jockeys and prepared by trainers, with owners and racing stables also central to each entry. The meeting includes supporting races over hurdles and fences, giving spectators a varied programme of British jump racing. Sandown Park’s turf course is known for its challenging obstacles and demanding finish, making race tactics and accurate jumping especially important. Fans can follow the field, jockey bookings, trainers, race times and results through official race-day information. For visitors and racing followers, Sandown Imperial Cup Day combines a high-profile handicap contest with the atmosphere of a leading Surrey racecourse and offers an early spring highlight on the British horse-racing calendar.
