The Pocono 500 is a historic NASCAR Cup Series stock-car race held at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. First run in 1974, the event became known for a challenging 500-mile contest on the track’s distinctive 2.5-mile triangular circuit, often called the “Tricky Triangle.” Unlike a conventional stadium, Pocono Raceway is a large outdoor motorsports venue set in the Pocono Mountains, with long straightaways, three differently banked turns, and grandstands for race-day spectators. The race’s field features professional drivers representing NASCAR teams, with entries and sponsors changing from season to season. Past Pocono 500 winners include celebrated competitors such as Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Denny Hamlin, illustrating the event’s appeal across multiple generations of stock-car racing. Strategy is especially important at Pocono, where teams must balance speed, fuel use, tire wear, and handling across the circuit’s varied corners. Although the Pocono 500 name is associated with earlier editions of the track’s Cup Series schedule, Pocono Raceway continues to host major NASCAR events. Fans searching for Pocono 500 history can explore its winners, drivers, teams, track layout, and place in American motorsports.
