Henley Royal Regatta is one of the world’s best-known rowing events, held each summer on the River Thames at Henley-on-Thames, England. Founded in 1839, the regatta attracts elite and club crews from Britain and around the world, including university, school and international rowers. Rather than competing as league teams, athletes race in crews representing their rowing clubs or institutions, with events for different boat classes and categories. The regatta’s signature course runs approximately 1 mile and 550 yards, from Temple Island to a finish near Henley Bridge. Races are generally contested as side-by-side knockout contests, with crews progressing through the draw until the winners are decided. Henley Royal Regatta is not held in a stadium: spectators watch from riverside enclosures, grandstands and public viewing areas along the course. Its combination of high-level competition, historic traditions and scenic Thames setting makes it a major fixture on the international rowing calendar. Visitors can follow the racing, learn about competing crews and rowers, and experience a distinctive event that brings together competitive sport and the heritage of rowing.
