The Vertem Futurity Trophy is a prestigious Group 1 flat horse race for two-year-old colts and fillies, traditionally held at Doncaster Racecourse in South Yorkshire near the end of the British flat-racing season. Run over one mile, it tests young thoroughbreds’ stamina, balance and ability to handle a demanding pace, making it an important early guide to potential Classic contenders. The race was established in 1976 and was previously known as the Racing Post Trophy before taking the Vertem name. Unlike team sports, competition centres on individual horses, each partnered by a jockey and prepared by a trainer; the field and connections change every year. Doncaster’s Town Moor venue is known for its long, level straight, which gives runners room to challenge in the closing stages. The race has a notable history of producing future champions and prominent performers, and its result attracts attention from racing fans, breeders and prospective owners. For visitors, the Vertem Futurity Trophy offers a chance to experience top-level British horse racing, see emerging talent in action and enjoy a major fixture at one of the country’s established racecourses.
