The St Leger Stakes is a historic British horse-racing event held each September at Doncaster Racecourse in South Yorkshire. First run in 1776, it is the oldest of Britain’s five Classic races and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most prestigious flat-racing contests. The Group 1 race covers 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 115 yards, testing the stamina and staying ability of three-year-old thoroughbreds. Eligible runners are colts and fillies, while geldings cannot compete. Unlike team sports, the St Leger brings together individual horses, their jockeys, trainers and owners, with each partnership aiming to claim one of racing’s most celebrated prizes. The race is traditionally the final leg of the British Triple Crown, following the 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby, although completing the treble is rare. Its long history, demanding distance and place in the Classic calendar make the St Leger a major attraction for racing fans and visitors to Doncaster. For those following British horse racing, it offers a compelling test of endurance, tactical riding and equine talent.
