The Old Newton Cup is a long-established British flat horse race held at Haydock Park Racecourse in Merseyside, England, as part of the venue’s summer racing programme. First run in 1807, it is widely recognised as one of the country’s oldest handicap races and takes its name from the nearby historic settlement of Newton, now part of Newton-le-Willows. The contest is run over approximately one mile and three furlongs, testing both stamina and speed, and is open to older thoroughbreds carrying weights allocated according to their official ratings. Unlike team sports, the Old Newton Cup features a field of individual horses, each partnered by a jockey and prepared by a trainer; their form, assigned weight, and ability to handle the course all influence the outcome. The race typically attracts competitive runners from leading British stables and provides an important summer target for middle-distance handicap specialists. Haydock Park’s broad, mostly level track and long finishing straight create a searching test, where positioning and a well-timed challenge can be decisive. For racing fans, the Old Newton Cup combines sporting heritage with a high-quality contest on one of the North West’s best-known race days.
