The Northumberland Plate is one of Britain’s historic staying handicaps, first run in 1833 and now a feature of the summer racing calendar in Newcastle upon Tyne. Staged at Newcastle Racecourse in Gosforth Park, the race is run over two miles on the course’s Tapeta all-weather track, which replaced turf for the event in 2016. It is a valuable handicap, bringing together horses of different ages and abilities, with weight assigned according to official ratings to help create a competitive field. Rather than teams, the main contenders are the horses, trained by racing stables and partnered by professional jockeys; trainers, jockey bookings and recent form are useful factors for fans assessing the race. The Northumberland Plate is the centrepiece of the Northumberland Plate Festival, a multi-day meeting that attracts racegoers from across the region and beyond. Often nicknamed the “Pitmen’s Derby,” it has a strong connection to the North East’s sporting heritage. For visitors, Newcastle Racecourse provides a large venue with grandstand facilities, viewing areas and hospitality options, making the Plate a major fixture for both local spectators and national racing audiences.
