The Matchbook Brigadier Gerard Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race held at Sandown Park Racecourse in Esher, Surrey, England. Run on the turf over 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 50 yards, the race is open to horses aged four and older and is traditionally staged in late May as part of Sandown’s evening racing programme. Rather than competing teams, the field features thoroughbred racehorses, each partnered by a jockey and prepared by a trainer. The contest gives established middle-distance horses an opportunity to test their form early in the British flat season, with the result often attracting interest from racing fans and bettors assessing contenders for later summer targets. Its name honours Brigadier Gerard, the celebrated British racehorse who won 17 of his 18 career starts during the early 1970s. Matchbook has sponsored the event, which is run under the rules of British horse racing and typically draws a competitive lineup from leading owners, trainers and jockeys. For visitors, Sandown Park provides a racecourse setting with grandstand viewing and facilities near London, making the Brigadier Gerard Stakes a notable fixture on the UK horse racing calendar.
