The Lincoln, officially known as the Lincoln Handicap, is a major British flat horse race that traditionally marks the start of the turf racing season. Staged at Doncaster Racecourse in South Yorkshire, England, the race is run over one mile and attracts a large field of thoroughbreds competing for an important early-season title. Unlike team sports, the Lincoln features individual horses, each partnered with a jockey and prepared by a trainer; the handicap system assigns weights to help give runners with different ability levels a more competitive chance. The race has a long history, having first been held in 1853 at Lincoln Racecourse before moving to Doncaster in 1965. It is usually scheduled in spring as part of Doncaster’s opening Flat meeting, with the exact date and declared runners changing each year. Fans follow the horses, jockeys, trainers, starting positions and official weights to assess the field and race prospects. With its historic status, large competitive lineup and place in the British racing calendar, the Lincoln remains one of the season’s most anticipated handicaps and a popular event for racegoers and sports fans.
