The Derby, officially the Betfred Derby, is one of the world’s most prestigious flat horse races and a highlight of the British racing calendar. First run in 1780, it takes place at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, England, usually in early June. The Group 1 contest is open to three-year-old colts and fillies, who race over one mile, four furlongs and six yards on Epsom’s distinctive undulating turf course. Unlike team sports, The Derby features individual horses, each partnered with a jockey and prepared by a trainer for the demanding course, including its famous downhill turns and steep finish. Owners, trainers, jockeys and racing fans follow the field as leading contenders compete for the historic title and prize money. The race is a central event of the Epsom Derby Festival and forms part of the British flat-racing season’s Classic series. Its long history, challenging track and strong international profile make The Derby a major occasion for horse racing enthusiasts. For results, race details and background on Epsom Downs, The Derby remains an essential event to follow.
