The City of York Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race held at York Racecourse in North Yorkshire, England, during the four-day Ebor Festival each August. Run over seven furlongs on the Knavesmire’s left-handed turf track, the race is open to horses aged three and older and attracts leading sprinters and milers from Britain and Ireland. First staged in 2000, it was promoted to Group 2 status in 2017, reflecting its growing importance in the European racing calendar. The field is made up of individual thoroughbred racehorses rather than teams, with each runner partnered by a jockey and prepared by a trainer. Tactics, starting position, pace and the horses’ ability to handle York’s course can all influence the result. Recent notable winners include Kinross, who claimed the prize in 2022 and 2023, and Montassib, winner in 2024. The race offers fans a high-quality test of speed and stamina and provides an important feature of York’s summer meeting. Race details, declared runners and results are published by York Racecourse and racing authorities ahead of each renewal.
