Melbourne Cup Day is Australia’s celebrated horse racing event, held each year on the first Tuesday in November at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. Its main attraction is the Melbourne Cup, a prestigious 3,200-metre handicap race for thoroughbred stayers, featuring horses, jockeys and trainers from Australia and overseas. Unlike team sports, the Cup is contested by individual horses, with each horse carrying a weight determined by race handicapping rules. Owners, trainers and jockeys work together to prepare and guide their runners, while a large field competes for the title and substantial prize money. The Flemington track, known for its long straight and wide course, provides the setting for the race and the broader Melbourne Cup Carnival. The event also includes other thoroughbred races, along with fashion and public celebrations, but the Cup remains the day’s sporting focus. For racing fans and visitors, Melbourne Cup Day offers an opportunity to follow horse form, jockey and trainer records, race conditions and results. It is widely known as “the race that stops a nation” and is a major fixture on Australia’s horse racing calendar.
