The Epsom Oaks is one of Britain’s most prestigious flat horse races, bringing together the leading three-year-old fillies, their jockeys and trainers at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, England. First run in 1779, the Group 1 contest is staged over 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 6 yards, testing stamina, balance and race-day judgment on Epsom’s famous undulating turf course. The Oaks is a major fixture of the Epsom Derby Festival, traditionally held on the Friday before the Derby, and forms part of the British Classics, the country’s historic series of elite races for three-year-old horses. Unlike team sports, its competitors are individual horses representing their owners and racing stables, with jockeys guiding each filly through a demanding course that includes a challenging descent and uphill finish. Fans follow the entries, draw, odds, jockey bookings and results to assess the field and identify likely contenders. With a long history, a celebrated venue and a place among the season’s most important races, the Epsom Oaks remains a highlight of British horse racing and a compelling test of class and stamina.
